UPI's 'Faces of Globalization' series

WASHINGTON, March 10 (UPI) -- UPI to begin "Faces of Globalization" series on Thursday.

Chances are if a U.S. consumer calls for information or service of some kind, someone in India will answer the call. This so-called business process outsourcing of U.S. and European jobs has lately led to political controversy in the Western Hemisphere, while at the same time it has been earning Indian workers good wages. But the dark side for workers on the subcontinent is the burnout rate and the alienation this kind of work creates.

UPI's upcoming piece by correspondent Indrajit Basu in Calcutta kicks off a half-year "Faces of Globalization" series that will focus each week on one or more workers in locales ranging from India, China, South America, Europe and the Middle East to the heartland of the United States. Over the course of the next six months the series will look at a wide range of social and economic issues facing those whose jobs have been affected for good or ill by the worldwide interconnection of investment, trade and technology that has come to be known as globalization.
