BEIJING, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Fast-food giant McDonald's announced Thursday that it plans to nearly double its restaurants in China before the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
McDonald's operates 580 restaurants in China but plans to increase that number to 1,000 by the time the 2008 games begin.
"This year we'll build more restaurants in China than in any other country," McDonald's executive Charlie Bell said.
The company has also signed an eight-year renewal to sponsor the Olympic games for an undisclosed sum until 2012.
McDonald's said it has signed up Chinese basketball star Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets as an official spokesman. He will participate in promotions tied to the Olympics, executives said.
In addition to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, McDonald's will also sponsor the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy; the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada; and the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which will be awarded to a host city in July 2005.
