LA CROSSE, Wis., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Gov. Jim Doyle says Wisconsin will establish a Minnesota-style prescription drug Web site to help its residents buy cheaper medicines from Canada.

Minnesota began operating a state-sponsored Internet site that allows consumers to order Canadian prescription drugs this year. Wisconsin will expand its current site to allow drug orders despite opposition by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which has not approved importing drugs from Canada.

"Wisconsin and Minnesota are leading the way in the fight for lower price prescription drugs," Doyle said. "Now we take the next steps by working closely together to ensure safety and expand the number of pharmacies participating in the program."

The Midwest governors also discussed creating manufacturing jobs and agriculture Thursday at their annual working summit at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Both men plan to attend the Governors' Summit on Prescription Drugs co-hosted by Pawlenty and Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in Washington Feb. 24.
