127,000 Corvettes in third GM recall

DETROIT, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The General Motors Corp. announced Tuesday it is recalling about 127,000 Chevrolet Corvettes in its third major vehicle recall in less than a week.

GM said it will repair a problem that can cause the electronic steering column to fail to unlock in 127,000 Corvettes. The repair will be made at no cost to owners.

The recall covers 1997-2000 Corvettes with automatic transmissions in the United States, Canada and Mexico, 1997-2004 Corvettes with automatic transmissions in Europe and export countries, and 1997-2004 Corvettes with manual transmissions in North America, Europe and export countries.

GM said no injuries, fatalities or crashes have been reported.

Owners of the recalled vehicles will receive notification letters from GM instructing them to have the sports cars serviced at Chevrolet dealers between April and June.

The recall is the third for GM since Friday, when 1.8 million 1997-2001 model cars were recalled for a potential defect in the ignition switch that could cause a fire in the steering column.

GM also recalled about 600,000 SUVs Monday for a possibly faulty windshield wiper module.
