Vodaphone may buy AT&T Wireless

LONDON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- British cell phone company may attempt to buy the third largest U.S. cell phone company, At&T Wireless, the BBC reported Sunday.

Vodafone executives have until Friday to decide on a reported $37 billion bid to beat U.S. rival Cingular's $30-billion bid, according to reports in the Sunday Telegraph. Cingular is owned by SBC Communications and BellSouth.

However, to make the deal, Vodafone would have to sell its 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless -- Verizon's technology is not compatible with Vodafone's other networks, while AT&T's is.

The decision is considered a nail-biter for Vodafone executives because it could lose its Verizon stake and lose the AT&T bid -- and lose all of its U.S. presence.

Other possible suitors for AT&T Wireless include Japan's NTTDoCoMo and Nextel in the United States.
