Microsoft, IBM fight over Linux

SEATTLE, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Two U.S. computer industry giants are duking it out with dueling advertisements over a computer operating system that is free, USA Today reported Tuesday.

The system, Linux, is known as an "open source" operating system, meaning it can be obtained and upgraded at no cost simply by downloading from the Internet.

However, it represents a threat to Microsoft, the No. 1 software maker. To fight Linux's growing popularity, Microsoft has launched an ad campaign claiming that -- over time -- Linux ends up costing more than Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Now enter IBM, the main frame producer that has a financial interest in Linux succeeding. IBM is launching counter ads and says it may distribute Linux desktop PC programs to its own employees.
