HELSINKI, Finland, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Linux is releasing a new version, 2.6.0, that is expected to be better suited to powerful computers with multiple processors.
It's the first major Linux change since 2.4.0 was released in January 2001.
Linux founder Linus Torvalds announced the new version on the kernel mailing list, CNET News.com reported.
"It's not the totally empty patch I was hoping for, but judging by the bugs I worked on personally, things are looking pretty good," Torvalds said.
The new version has the ability to run on multiprocessor servers handling tasks such as bank account management, stock trades, supermarket sales transactions and e-mail delivery, CNET said.
The 2.4 kernel works on servers with four or sometimes eight processors, but the 2.6 kernels will stretch to 32-processor systems.
