SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Edward J. Zander has been chosen Motorola's new chairman and chief executive officer, the company announced Tuesday.

The 56-year-old Zander, who succeeds Christopher B. Galvin, most recently was a managing director of Silver Lake Partners, a leading private equity fund focused on investments in technology industries.

Zander begins work for Motorola on Jan. 5.

Mike Zafirovski will remain president and chief operating officer of Motorola.

Before Silver Lake Partners, Zander was president of Sun Microsystems until June 2002. Under Zander Sun grew to $18 billion in revenues, became the top company in the server market, and emerged as a pre-eminent supplier of network infrastructure.
