Boeing fires top financial officer

CHICAGO, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Chicago-based Boeing fired its chief financial officer and another executive Monday, a former official with the U.S. Air Force, in an ethics probe.

Michael Sears, Boeing's executive vice president and chief financial officer, improperly negotiated the hiring of Darleen Druyun from the U.S. Air Force while she was in a position to influence Boeing contracts, an internal investigation by the giant defense contractor revealed.

Sears and Druyun, then tried to cover up the misconduct, which is being investigated by the government, the International Herald Tribune reported.

Druyun, who joined Boeing in January, was a top military acquisition official, with responsibilities for Air Force purchases.

This autumn, the Pentagon began a probe into allegations she acted improperly in giving Boeing financial data about a competing bid on a $21 billion leasing contract for refueling tankers.

Government documents showed that Druyun told Boeing that a rival, Airbus Industrie, had submitted a bid that was $5 million to $17 million less per plane than Boeing's offer.

Boeing won the business, and the deal is part of the $401.3 billion defense bill that President George W. Bush signed Monday.
