Report: Fastow plea bargain talks fail

HOUSTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Negotiations on a plea bargain for one of the defendants in the Enron case have fallen through, the Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday.

A plea bargain for Lea Fastow, the wife of former Enron Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow, appears dead, according to the newspaper. Negotiations had been under way for the last few weeks on a possible five-month prison term.

Lea Fastow, a former assistant treasurer at Enron, faces six criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering and making false tax returns. She has pleaded innocent to all the charges, and her trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 10.

Enron Task Force prosecutors and Fastow's attorney would not comment on the report.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge David Hittner issued a 17-page order on pre-trial issues, an indication that the trial is going forward. Among other issues the judge refused a request from Fastow that her trial be moved from Houston.
