570,000 GM pickups, vans, SUVs recalled

DETROIT, April 28 (UPI) -- Recall notices are going out to the owners of about 570,000 1997-98 model General Motors Corp. pickups, minivans and sport-utility vehicles because of a potentially faulty power mirror control switch that can start a fire.

The affected vehicles are 1997-98 Chevrolet and GMC Suburban truck wagons, the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy SUVs, the 1998 Chevrolet C/K and GMC Sierra pickups and 1998 Chevorlet Astro and GMC Safari minivans.

About 507,000 of the light trucks are registered in the United States, about 46,000 are in Canada and the rest are on the road outside North America.

GM began notifying owners of the recall last week.

Dealers will install a fused jumper harness in the driver's side door wiring harness leading to the mirror to provide over-current protection at no cost to owners, said Jim Schell, GM product Safety communications spokesman.

GM had received reports of 67 electrical fires because of short-circuits in the side-view mirror switches, resulting in three injuries.

Earlier in April, GM recalled more than 341,000 SUVs to repair defective seat-belt systems that may be linked to 15 deaths.

Full-sized GM pickups and SUVs introduced in 1999 and 2000 and the new mid-size Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada introduced in 2001 are not affected by the recall.
