Bratwurst recalled for undeclared egg

WASHINGTON, July 25 (UPI) -- Carle's Bratwurst Inc. of Bucyrus, Ohio, Thursday recalled 190 pounds of fresh and frozen sausage because the meat product might contain undeclared eggs, which could trigger an allergic reaction in people who have a sensitivity.

The sausage was distributed to one store in Ohio and sold to Internet customers in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

"We want consumers who are allergic to eggs to be aware of the recall," said William Hudnall, acting administrator of the Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service. "People with sensitivities to eggs may wish to check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled products."

The recalled products are various sized packages of Carle's Bratwurst SWEET ITALIAN SAUSAGE and Carle's Bratwurst HOT ITALIAN SAUSAGE with the establishment No. 18355 inside the USDA inspection seal.

The sausage was produced from July 1, 2001 to July 24, 2002. The undeclared allergen was discovered through routine FSIS sampling.

Consumers can contract Carle's Bratwurst at 419-562-7741. Consumers with other food safety questions can telephone the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555 or access the FSIS Web site at fsis.usda.gov.
