Sara Lee to cut 1,000 more jobs

GLENVIEW, Ill., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Sara Lee Corp. plans to cut 1,000 jobs -- mostly from its apparel unit -- from its payroll, bringing to 14,263 the number of jobs lost in the last 18 months, according to a published report Tuesday.

The Chicago Tribune reported the appointment of Chief Financial Officer Cary D. McMillan to head up the company's clothing unit signals more job reductions are in the offing, although a Sara Lee spokeswoman said no new cuts are planned.

Sara Lee has been undergoing a restructuring.

In its most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Glenview, Ill., -based firm indicated that 600 jobs will be cut from its apparel unit, which accounted for 44 percent of Sara Lee's $17.7 billion in sales last year, and the rest will come from cuts in its meat and bakery divisions.

Apparel unit sales in the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 29 were off 37 percent compared with last year.

As part of its restructuring plan, Sara Lee has spun off or sold 18 businesses, including Coach leather goods, PYA/Monarch foodservice and its European Champion clothing line.
