Microsoft to call for EU hearing

By CHRIS WHITE

BRUSSELS, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The European Union expects Microsoft to call for a hearing into its concerns about its "behavior and practices in Europe" before Christmas, a European Commission spokeswoman said Monday.

Despite the settlement of Microsoft's disputes with U.S. authorities, Amelia Torres said, "It was too early to judge whether that will affect the issues in Europe."

She added: "The issue here is still ongoing and we expect that Microsoft will call for a hearing and that should happen before Christmas."

The Commission launched proceedings against Microsoft under its competition [anti-trust] rules at the end of August and Torres said that the investigation is continuing, implying it was unlikely the decision to settle the legal proceedings in the United States would affect the European process.
