Bargain hunters to boost discounters

CHICAGO, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Despite layoffs and dismal economic news, the average American household plans to spend more than $900 on holiday gifts this year, and discounters will be among the biggest winners. Bank One chief economist Diane Swonk says practical purchases will replace extravagance.
