In fact, Barbie's measurements are so extreme that, were she to come to life, she wouldn't be able to walk and would almost certainly be anorexic.
Artist Nickolay Lamm decided to run with that premise, using 3D modeling and photoshop to create a series of images showing Barbie with real-world measurements.
Using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics, Lamm determined an average 19-year-old woman would have a 31-inch waist, 33-inch hips and 32-inch bust -- compared to Barbie's 18-33-36-inch measurements.
"If we criticise skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well," Lamm said. "Furthermore, a realistically proportioned Barbie actually looks pretty good in the pictures I produced.
"So, if there's even a small chance of Barbie in its present form negatively influencing girls and if Barbie looks good as an average sized woman in America," he said. "What's stopping Mattel from making one?"
Lamm has toyed with the beauty concepts of dolls before, including a series of "Barbie without makeup" images that received substantial attention.
