Unknown Speaker: “Biotech will yield foods with better nutritional characteristics.”

Howard Dicus: Vice President Quayle announcing the FDA decision to permit the sale of genetically altered food.

Dan Quayle: “We will not compromise safety.”

Dr. Rebecca Goldberg: “FDA is putting their interest to the biotechnology industry ahead of consumers.”

Howard Dicus: It was more than Dr. Rebecca Goldberg of the Environmental Defense Fund could swallow.

Dr. Rebecca Goldberg: “Every now and then something comes along that’s a big surprise and turns out not to be safe in foods.”

Howard Dicus: A federal panel in 1992 okayed the use of genetic testing by police.

Dr. Victor Mckusick: “We confirm the general reliability of using DNA typing in forensic science.”

Howard Dicus: Dr. Victor Mckusick.
