LAPX97070212 - 2 JULY 1997 - HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, USA: Actor Jimmy Stewart in a 1956 file photo, with actors Jim Cagney (center0 and Orson Welles in Hollywood. Stewart died today in his Beverly Hills, California home. Stewart was 89. cs/files UPI

Dennis Daly: We lost some very familiar faces and voices during the past 12 months: actress and writer Selma Diamond, the gravelly voiced bailiff on "Night Court", died of cancer; painter Marc Chagall; Mormon President Spenser Kimble; and former Supreme Court Justice Potter Steward.

Actress Ruth Gordon died. In the movie "Harold and Maude", she portrayed the familiar theme of a feisty, slightly eccentric senior citizen with a zest for life …

Ruth Gordon (as Maude in "Harold and Maude"): "You know, at one time we used to break into pet shops to liberate the canaries. But I decided that was an idea way before its time. Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing. Ah, my, how the world still dearly loves a cage."

Dennis Daly: Actor Yul Brynner died of lung cancer in 1985, leaving a legacy of pleas for others to stop smoking.

Bill Scott died. He was one of the country's best-loved cartoon voices …

Bill Scott (as Bullwinkle J. Moose in "Rocky and Bullwinkle"): Hi, there. This is Bullwinkle Moose."

Dennis Daly: We also lost Orson Welles: actor, writer, director, genius. Best remembered for the movie "Citizen Kane" and the all-too-scary radio program "War of the Worlds" and those Paul Masson TV commercials. With the death of Orson Welles, one of the great voices of the 20th Century was silenced forever …

Orson Welles: "With His hands, God lifted the dry land from the deep, spinning it as a potter into a world."
