Pye Chamberlain: Hubert Humphrey’s old friend, Isaac Stern, rendered a musical tribute as the happy warrior lay in state on the black 20:36 (inaudible) which had borne the remains of Lincoln and Kennedy. The powerful and once-powerful of the nation gathered beneath the Capitol’s great cast-iron dome to pay the final respects. Old friends and old enemies of Humphrey were there, from Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon to President Carter and Humphrey’s protأ©gأ©, Vice-President Walter Mondale …

Pye Chamberlain: The ceremony was brief, simple and moving and, in a grace note that would have delighted Humphrey, a moment that had been scheduled to be silent for prayer or meditation was filled at President Carter’s request with a spontaneous rendering of "America The Beautiful" by the assembled dignitaries ...
