Art Briles officially out at Baylor

Art Briles is officially out at Baylor.

The university announced Friday night that it reached agreement with the former coach on a termination of their "employment relationship" effective immediately.

"Both parties acknowledge that there were serious shortcomings in the response to reports of sexual violence by some student-athletes, including deficiencies in university processes and the delegation of disciplinary responsibilities with the football program," a joint statement from Baylor and Briles read.

Briles came under fire over the program's handling of sexual assault complaints against football players. He was initially suspended by the school's board of regents with intent to terminate in late May.

Briles had challenged a federal civil rights lawsuit against him and said he would not settle a lawsuit filed by a woman who was raped by a Baylor football player. He claimed he was wrongfully terminated from his job but later withdrew his demand after reports surfaced that he had reached a settlment in his contract dispute with the school.

There were eight years remaining on Briles' contract. No financial details of a settlement were made available by the private school.

"Baylor wishes Coach Briles well in his future endeavors," the statement read. "Coach Briles expresses his thanks to the city of Waco and wishes the Baylor Bears success in the future."

Jim Grobe was hired May 30 to serve as acting coach for the 2016 season. All of Briles' former assistants will remain on staff this season.
