Patrice Secora: On August 23th, Bashir Gemayel was elected President of Lebanon giving the people of that country new hope that he could bring stability to a worn torn country, but within three weeks even before he was inaugurated Gemayel was killed during a bombing attack at his Beirut party headquarters. Within a short period of time the Lebanese parliament named Gemayel's brother Amine is the countries new president. Amine Gemayel soon after taking power called on the United States, Italy and France to send troops to his country, peace-keeping forces to restore order. He also asked for the authority to rule by decree. The Lebanese parliament granted him 6 months.
