Charleston Southern names Conrad

CHARLESTON, S.C., May 28 -- Charleston Southern Tuesday promoted Tom Conrad to the position of head men's basketball coach. Conrad had served as associate head coach at Charleston Southern for the last five years and was named to replace Gary Edwards, who stepped down last week to accept the head coaching position at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The 39-year-old Conrad inherits a team that returns nine players, including three starters, after finishing 15-13 overall and tied for second in the Big South with a 9-5 mark. 'This position is what I have been aiming for ever since I got into coaching,' Conrad said. 'It's a great opportunity for me, and I think we should have a solid team that could compete for the Big South championship again this season.' In his capacity as associate coach, Conrad has directed the Buccaneers recruiting efforts over the past five seasons, including Eric Burks and T.L. Latson, the past two Big South Players of the Year.
