Seles edges Martina in Chicago final

CHICAGO -- Top seed Monica Seles rebounded from a slow start to a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 2 seed Martina Navratilova Sunday in the final of the $375,000 Virginia Slims of Chicago.

Seles needed 88 minutes to defeat defending champion Navratilova, who has won the tournament in 12 of her 17 appearances and has a 68-5 liftetime record in Chicago.

Seles, the top ranked player in the world and winner of the Australian Open last month, has won all 11 of her matches in 1993. She also defeated Navratilova in the final of the season-ending Virginia Slims Championships last November.

Seles, of Yugoslavia, routed No. 3 Mary Joe Fernandez of the United States, 6-3, 6-0, Saturday in the semifinals. Navratilova defeated Bulgarian Katerina Maleeva 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in the semifinals.
