Bullet holes found at new Comiskey Park

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox officials said Thursday workers putting finishing touches on the new Comiskey Park found a bullet hole in the back of the center field scoreboard.

Workers then inspected seats and found bullet holes in three of them, Sox Senior Vice President Rob Gallas said.

'We had just done it (a complete check of the seats) when this first came up a month ago,' Gallas said.

He said the team had no idea when the shots were fired or from where, but hoped a police investigation could answer some questions.

There had been reports for weeks of shots being fired at the new Comiskey. Some said they had been fired from a public housing project located across the Dan Ryan Expressway. But until Thursday, all investigations disproved those reports, he said.

'It's kind of like a self-fulfilling prophesy,' Gallas said. 'In the last couple weeks (Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard) Roper and (Chicago Tribune columnist Mike) Royko both wrote columns and somebody just decided to see if they could make it come true.'

Royko even offered a cash reward to anyone who could provide proof of bullet holes to disprove the recurring rumor.
