BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- Forty youths broke out of a juvenile reformatory and went on a one-hour rampage in the southern town of Stolac, demolishing cars and store windows, newspaper reports said today.

Reports said reformatory guards and police chased and caught the teenagers, many of whom were intoxicated, and brought them back to the reformatory about 310 miles southwest of Belgrade.

Authorities said the delinquents broke into several shops and department stores and stole liquor. A few of the escapees hurt themselves vandalizing parked cars, shattering display windows and fighting with each other, officials said, but none of the town's citizens was assaulted.

The breakout occurred after some inmates returned drunk to the reformatory from a Saturday afternoon furlough and started a brawl with other inmates, reformatory officials said.
