BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Michael Porter, a 5-foot-11 guard considered one of the Top 20 high school recruits in the country, will be academically ineligible to play basketball for Virginia Tech next season.

Porter, who won a national slam dunk contest at a recent high school basketball all-star game, will not finish his eight semesters of high school with the NCAA's required 2.0 grade point average, Virginia Tech Coach Charlie Moir confirmed Wednesday.

Porter, who finished with a 1.97 average, needs a summer English class to graduate from high school. Moir still hopes to land the highly touted Porter, although there are reports he will go to Division II Virginia Union, in Richmond, Va.

If Porter, who averaged over 20 points per game during his high school career, decides to attend Tech, which is close to his home in Pulaski, Va., he'd have to go a year without a scholarship and maintain a 2.0 average.
