SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Post-Standard endorsed Ronald Reagan for president and Republican Jacob Javits for re-election to the Senate from New York.

In an editorial Wednesday, the newspaper said, 'Jimmy Carter is responsible for pushing the United States close to a national bankruptcy and monetary collapse.'

On the other hand, the newspaper said Reagan 'personifies a firm hand at the wheel of government for the next four years.'

In an editorial Thursday, the Post said it is supporting Javits 'solely as a matter of principle' because it opposed tactics used by the Republican nominee, Alfonse D'Amato, in the primary election.

D'Amato's campaign focused on the 76-year-old senator's age and his health problems resulting from a motor neuron disease.
